It's not every day you find a piano like this one-family-owned, 1941 Steinway Long A in extremely clean, mostly original condition! The traditional, satin ebony cabinet has only minor wear and shows off well in its current condition. We haven't even done any "touch up" and the piano only looks like it is 15 or 20 years old.
The spruce soundboard is in perfect condition without any cracks. The ribs are tight against the soundboard and helping provide good crown. The bridges have no checking/cracking and are perfect. The strings have been replaced (maybe 20 years ago?) and 4/0 pins were installed to ensure tuning stability. The original pinblock is in great condition and not showing any issues.
It appears new dampers were installed at the same time the strings were replaced, as they are in too good of condition to be from 1941. The action (hammers, shanks, flanges, wippens) all look original, but don't show excessive wear at all. The action was a tad sluggish when it first arrived so we treated it with CLP (a lubricant) and the piano plays great now!
The ivories are super nice and had only three tiny nicks when it arrived in our shop. We have repaired them and (even knowing where they were) it is difficult to find the repairs. You would have to look high and low to find a nicer set of genuine ivory keytops!
The old-growth spruce soundboard in this piano provides a tone that will give you that warm/fuzzy feeling! If you are a bit of a piano connoisseur and only prefer the best, this 6'4 1/2" Steinway will not disappoint you.
IF you could get a new Steinway Long A, it would be in the neighborhood of $82K....without ivory keys and the benefit of a well-seasoned, tight grained spruce soundboard. You can own this high quality American-made Steinway grand for less than you'd spend on a much smaller and cheaper Asian grand.
By the way, there is more interesting history on this piano we'd be glad to share with you! Please give us a call at 1-800-950-3774 and we'll answer any of your questions. Don't hesitate, or this piano will be long gone!
