WOW. This is one super-clean, wonderful instrument!
From looking at this Kawai 52" professional upright, you would think it was either new....or maybe 5 years old; however, it was manufactured in 1987. It doesn't look like it at all. Both inside and out, it has been extremely well cared for. Just look at the pics.
Due to the height of this instrument, it has a massive spruce soundboard and long, long strings which produce a powerful tone you'll typically only experience in grands. This piano actually has more soundboard surface area and longer strings than are found in many baby grands. You will be pleased with the tonal quality and responsive action.
For experienced pianists, you will appreciate the fact this model includes a full sostenuto pedal! These are usually only found on top-of-the-line verticals and grand pianos. Most professional uprights are limited to bass sustain only. You also get the benefit of a mute rail for playing softly. This is controlled by a seperate lever under the keyboard on the left end.
This model features a very large music rack that is independent from the fallboard (keycover), so you can close the fallboard without needing to put away your music or having to flip up the skinny little music "shelf" found on the majority of professional uprights. The fallboard locks, too, allowing you to keep curious fingers off the piano when necessary.
The most-similar new Kawai is the 53" K800....which lists for $24,195. Yes, the K800 is an inch taller, but you'll find this US75 to be very comparable in tonal quality and action responsiveness. It is up to you to determine whether you "need" the latest and greatest new model.....or if saving over $15K (and having a piano that looks and sounds nearly identical) might be a better investment.
