1920 Steinway Model Long A Grand - Grand Pianos

This Steinway Long A has it all...a gorgeous flame mahogany cabinet, a beautiful tone, provenance, and a complete restoration by Steinway in 2005!

Originally built in 1920, this 6' 4 1/2" Steinway is large enough to produce the volume necessary to fill a church sanctuary or school auditorium, yet not so big that it will overpower your living room. The ratio of string length and soundboard surface area in the Long A provides optimal tone quality, making it a preferred model by many pianists.

During the extensive restoration of this world-class piano, there were no shortcuts taken. New NY Steinway parts were installed in the action (hammers, shanks, flanges and whippens). The soundboard and ribs were replaced with premium solid spruce. The cabinet was stripped, primed and refinished in a closed pore, hand-rubbed lacquer finish. The cast iron plate was also refinished and detailed to look like it just came out of the factory yesterday. The hard rock maple pinblock was replaced and new strings and nickel tuning pins were installed. New historic fallboard and soundboard decals have been reapplied to match the vintage of this wonderful instrument. All brass hardware was polished and shines like new.

Regarding this instrument’s history, we are unfortunately unable to substantiate it at this time; however, we believe the story to be factual. We acquired this Steinway from a lady in Maine who reports her grandfather (the original owner) visited Steinway in NYC with the famous composer and pianist Leopold Godowsky, who was a personal friend of his. Mr. Godowsky helped him select this grand piano. It was also reported that both George and Ira Gershwin were friends of the family and played on this instrument! If you would have seen the home this piano came from, there isn’t much reason to doubt the granddaughter’s story. Furthermore, after you have the pleasure to sit down and play this piano, you will realize that it isn’t just the ordinary, run-of-the-mill piano!

Needless to say, when we acquired this piano, the seller was downsizing and her brother was gravely ill. She has promised to send documentation as to the piano’s history (photos of the Gershwins at the piano, letters, etc) but, as of yet, has been tied up with other family matters. Although we cannot promise we will be able to verify the piano’s wonderful history, we are hopeful. Even without documentation, this piano is a very fine instrument and superb value at our friendly, Kansas price.

Well, everything you can hope for in an heirloom quality instrument is found right here in this Steinway grand piano! You could spend in the neighborhood of $75,000 for a new Steinway that won't sound any better than, or look nearly as good as, this rare find. If you desire that special instrument to enjoy for the rest of your life (and one worthy of passing down for several generations)....you have found it!

For a modest investment, you can own a wonderful piece of history.
